| We are accepting inquiries for our 2009 breeding program and our 2008 waiting list is full. We have pups available occasionally and no more than 16 a year (if that!). People often wait for a year for our Brittanys and in this time we enjoy getting to know them as this provides for plenty of time to prepare for the arrival of a new Brittany pup, much like anticipating the birth of a new baby to the family. We plan our litters well in advance and our breeding program is very selective. We encourage and welcome people to visit us by appointment only. Please refer to our "DOG BLOG" for more information and photos. We use our website as a source of initial contact only. The majority of the time people reach us via personal referals such as from our veterinareans, people who have our Brittanys, club members, other dog fanciers, Brittany breeders, family, friends, AKC Breeder Classified, the American Brittany Club breeder referrals, and the Federation of Maine Dog Clubs Breeders Directory and/or the York County Kennel Club Breeders Referral. We take the code of ethics we adhere to very seriously as set forth by these organizations. We'd like our presence on the Internet to help re-direct and inform otherwise uninformed people who are inquiring about a Brittany. We also would like to help keep them from falling prey to those breeders whose ethics and standards are highly suspect and questionable. We always will prefer our Brittanys go to hunting active families. However, as most breeders know, the majority of their pups will live their lives loved fully as a pet in their new home. And there is NOTHING wrong with that as long as the owners are fully prepared for life with a Brittany. Our own screening process can be quite thorough. We absolutely discourage random internet 'shopping' which consists of contacting multiple breeders looking for just the right price or the immediate availability of a puppy. As an internet site ourselves we are very sensitive and highly aware of the need to avoid random inquiries and/or classified ads. It is not our intention to be listed on multiple internet sites. You will find we are listed with one or two selective sites at our own request to reach a particular type of dog owner. We are happy to refer you to Brittany breeders who we consider to be responsible, reputable, with clean kennels and ethical business policies, and who put the welfare of their Brittanys above all else. Even though, personally visit any facility, (INCLUDING OURS) ask to see all the dogs and interact with them, request pedigrees and proof of AKC registration. A wall of ribbons (although I like ribbons too and have quite a few or our own!) does not necessary mean the welfare of the Brittany is put first. While there, beware of feeling pressured in any way to make a decision to buy a pup or make a deposit on the spot. Additionally, make sure that you clearly understand all terms of the sale before ever making a deposit. Another word of advice for those of you who plan to visit several Brittany breeders. It is important to keep track of verbal promises, get it in writing please! It goes without saying you should be aware of unscrupulous, unethical, Brittany breeding kennels. Maine is working hard to eliminate puppy mills and to educate the public about reputable, ethical breeders of quality dogs. We support this effort. While visiting a kennel, or having a phone conversation with a breeder - If you sense something is wrong - it probably is. You may find reading our FINDING THE RIGHT BREEDER information helpful. We welcome any and all comments and appreciate your interest in our Brittanys and are always happy to answer any questions you have. God Bless you, yours, and all things Brittany, John and Ann Short and our canine crew! |
