| IF IT's NOT A BRITTANY - IT's JUST A DOG ! |
| J & A's Brittanys (John is the "J", Ann is the "A"!) is dedicated to maintain forever a traditional and classic close hunting Maine Brittany for hunting families. Brittanys have been a part of our life since 1986. It all started when John brought home a bouncy, happy, liver and white 6 year old female named P & L's Cuddly Cricket out of Pride & Joy's Buschman. What an incredible hunting dog she was! In time, we searched for and found a suitable male to breed her to. Matthews Freckle and Cricket produced our first litter of Brittanys - a healthy litter of 5! We kept a male from this litter, "Crickets Hunter" as a hunting dog and pet extrodinaire. Hunter lived to be 13 and passed away in 2003. Although we thought that we could live our lives without a Brittany - we soon realized that was simply not true. Together, we began searching for our next Brittany and soon KJ's Ramblin' Molly Rose came into our life and things have never been the same! It may sound funny but Hunter's death served to somehow inspire us to re-establish the breeding program we started so many years ago. Molly, intentionally, was the complete opposite of Hunter - orange and white, and a female! And she certainly helped us through a difficult time in our life - simply by being herself. A quantum leap into today brings us several years into re-establishing our breeding program, our Brittany family is ever growing and we are proud to see how the outstanding lines we have purposely brought together are resulting in close-working gundogs that make excellent companions and have excellent potential to excel in the field and the ring! (Ann is no stranger to breeding purebred dogs. Her parents raised AKC registered Boston Terriers and she often draws from those experiences by referring to an invaluable breeding journal that her father kept in the '60s!) Our human family has grown too. We are proud of our 2 adult children who are each happily married. They have given us a total of 5 wonderful grandchildren who also get involved with all our Brittanys! The only thing we enjoy more than our Brits are the special times when our family is gathered around. We have to thank them for understanding our commitment and for the many times they help us out. In a couple of years when retirement is a reality we hope to move further north in hopes of more open country in which to hunt, train, raise, and enjoy even more thoroughly our Brittany family! W hile John has always enjoyed hunting with Brits and otherwise, it is "J & A's Apple Jack of Acton" pictured above who fulfills his gundog dreams. Our children have always hunted and will most likely pass this time honored tradition onto their children as well. We have discovered how very little can compare to waiting for "SILENT BELLS" while spending a beautiful fall day together walking through colorful Maine woodlands and fields with a Brittany hunting nearby. Recently, we have enjoyed giving our dogs the opportunity to compete in local field trials. Additionally, because we've been told we shouldn't be hiding our beautiful Brits out here in the Maine woods we began to attend dog shows, observe handlers and groomers, attended handling classes and actually entered our first dog show in January 2007! We have had fun. Even so, we realize that with breeding there comes a great responsibility to evaluate and re-evaluate our program. As we anticipate our future it is to the great Brittanys of the past that we look and to breeders that have gone before us. Our rose colored glasses must come off in either case, to realize that the foundation of the Brittany we seek to produce must be built upon reputable and truthful breeding practices of the past. In doing so, as we seek to improve the breed yet make mistakes along the way - our mistakes will never be made intentionally... We feel our greatest debt of gratitude is owed to those puppy buyers, who support our program, understand what we are trying to accomplish, and provide the necessary feedback to help us determine our successes or failures while loving our puppies unconditionally and welcoming them into their hearts and homes. If you have any comments, questions or advice, we can be reached via email jasbrittanys@comcast.net PS We have won our 1st 4 AKC Show points! |
